BESS
SystemAlso known as: Battery Storage, Energy Storage System, ESS
A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a facility that stores electrical energy in batteries and discharges it back to the grid or a load when needed. Utility-scale BESS plants typically combine battery containers (DC blocks), power conversion systems (PCS), transformers, and control systems to provide grid services such as frequency regulation, arbitrage, and capacity.
BESS has become a core piece of energy infrastructure as renewable energy penetration has grown. Unlike conventional generation, batteries can respond to grid signals in milliseconds, making them ideal for balancing supply and demand. The dominant chemistry for grid-scale BESS is lithium iron phosphate (LFP).
