Degradation

Performance

Also known as: Battery Degradation, Capacity Fade

Degradation is the irreversible loss of battery capacity that occurs through use (cycle aging) and the passage of time (calendar aging). As a battery degrades, its usable energy capacity and power capability decrease. Degradation rate depends on operating conditions: temperature, SOC range, C-rate, and depth of discharge. Manufacturers provide warranty curves specifying guaranteed minimum State of Health (SOH) at defined intervals. Asset owners plan for degradation by either oversizing the initial system or scheduling augmentation (adding new battery capacity) later in the project life.
